Every month we invite a different local artist to display their work in our dining room, creating an intimate gallery space for our patrons to enjoy. If you are an artist and are interested in utilizing the Great Adirondack Soup Company for your next display, please contact Chris Dominianni at 561-6408 Monday-Friday after 3pm.
Darlene Joy Virgin
Fabric Art/Photography
Darlene is a North Country artist. A resident of Plattsburgh, NY since 2005, she and her husband are adjusting to their change in lifestyle after the last of their four children left home. Darlene has been involved in art since she was a young girl making her own doll houses with cardboard and cutting fabric to make barbie clothes.
Many mediums she has worked in are: drawing, weaving, spinning and dyeing, pottery, quilting and now fabric art and photography. The fabric Art phase started in 2006 while at a workshop in central Florida. Several techniques are used in the pieces she creates. Some of these techniques include layering fabrics, stitching, shrinking, singeing and adding embellishments. Her fabric art is then matted and framed.
Her photography is a reflection of what she focuses on, in the world around her. She experiences joy as she notices texture, color, composition, design, light, reflections, patterns, the emotional connection to the subject, the combination of God created and man made. The time spent taking the photos becomes a time of worship and communing with God.
Her first public showing was here at the Great Adirondacks Soup Company. Her work was on display during the month of May in 2008. With the great encouragement from her first showing Darlene agreed to apply to a juried Art Festival brought to her attention by a good friend. To her surprise, she was accepted as one of only nine Americans invited to show at the Festiv' Art in Frelighsburg, Quebec. Over a gorgeous Labor Day weekend, Darlene and 144 other artists displayed their work to a crowd of 12,000 for two days. Darlene's work titled "Natural Borders" was awarded the grand prize for the best interpretation on the theme of the festival by a panel of judges. The prize included a check for a thousand dollars, but more valuable than that was the recognition of the unique qualities of her artwork.
She became a member of the NCCCA in Plattsburgh and was asked to join the art gallery in Sutton, Quebec. She has shown several pieces of her work in both places during this passed year. In October of this year she was also accepted to a juried show at the "Oyster Festival" in Oyster Bay, Long Island. There she met a large number of talented artist and craftsman and gained knowledge for her new career path.
